Judas Priest - Beyond the Realms of Death - Rock in Rio '91

Classical song from an emblematic Heavy Metal band... Judas Priest. Here, the drummer is Scott Travis. Even being a monster drummer, this video is here not because of him, but to show you one of the greatest headbangers of  this planet, the guitar player Glen Tipton. This song, made by the ex-drummer Les Binks also,  especially the solo, makes you start to think how some human beings have the power to compose something so powerful, beautiful and touching.

Mike Mangini

Nowadays, everyone knows that Mike Manginni is the new Dream Theater’s drummer, but before that, he recorded a very interesting Discovery’s TV Show called Time Warp , where extreme sensitivity cameras were filming all his moves playing, focusing all the details of the drumsticks touching the cymbals and drumheads… The result ? Impressive… check this out.

APRIL/2011

Hi People,

Here I am with the April’s Month’s Freakl ... And it will be very special ...

Usually, I send three or more videos of different drummers and subjects, but this time, I must talk about this event, that has as principal figure on it... The drummers.

That's right, it’s plural, drummers ... As many know Mike Portnoy, drummer and founding member of the Prog Metal band Dream Theater, left the band in 2010, and on the sequence of his left, the band has published that they would make some drummers auditions to see who would fill the post left by him ...

It was released a list of seven finalist drummers;

Aquiles Priester, Peter Wildoer, Marco Minnemann, Virgil Donati, Derek Roddy, Thomas Lang and Mike Mangini.

So ...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Besides that there were only really, really awesome drummers, we were represented by a Brazilian drummer ... Great Achilles ... That just for being there deserves big congratulations!

Giving a extra magic, they documented all the auditions in video, releasing it in three parts, averaging 20 minutes each, showing the entire process with all the drummers, ending with the announcement of the "new family member. "

The only thing I can say is, watch it... For, arguably, this was one of the most important events for the Drums scene of recent times.

Enjoy!

MARCH/2011

Motorcycle Rock Cruise

Zenith Ship

Surreal.

That was the most spoken word during the first Brazilian Motorcycle Rock Cruise, which happened between January 30rd and Feebruary 2nd. And this time, luck was on my side, because there I was, living my Lars Ulrich days, playing with Metallica tribute band (Damage Inc.) and enjoying as much as I could all other bands there, including Big Noise, Jef Scott Soto, Sepultura, Command 6 and tributes to AC/DC/ (Dirty Deeds), Iron Maiden (Children of the Beast), Ozzy Osbourne (Ozzmosis) and Beatles (Forever).

Damage Inc (Metallica Tribute) Alê, myself, Paulão and Edú.

Day One – 30/01

The first day was supposed to be some sort of territory acquaintance, for us to feel how being in a ship is, because I had never passed through this kind of experience before. But they forgot telling this to the AC/DC tribute guys, because they started it rocking hard! Can you imagine yourself in a cruise ship in a Sunday afternoon, under an incredibly hot sun, by the poolside, surrounded by metalheads and motorcyclists, food and drink at ease, with a band playing The Jack with a lot of chicks on the stage, with a clear, heavy and loud sound in a wonderful stage?

Well, my brother Castor’s words simplify this: “It seems we are living an afternoon session movie”. And that’s it! This was the first impression of the two upcoming days inside that ship.

Yet on the first day, I lent my cymbals with great pleasure to Ozzmosis drummer, who made a great gig in a smaller stage (I always forget the name of this place), and, as we were gonna play late night on the same stage, I decided to get my cymbals. That was when my friend Heloísa Vidal, from the event staff, came towards me and asked: “Could you lend your cymbals to Vinnie Appice?”. “WHAT?!?!” I answered, already going towards the drums. After that, I Just remember I had never taken the cymbals off the drums so fast before. After the cymbals were in the bag, I asked: “But… Can I give ‘em to him personally?” and heard the answer that made my trip: “Sure!”.

Right, after this moment I finally started believing that what’s already good, can get even better!
I had the pleasure to lend my cymbals to one of my drum heroes and the opportunity to tell him that I also play in a Dio tribute band, and that I tried hard to be faithful to his drumming. Him, in the kindest and funniest way ever, told me: “Yeah, nowadays I try it either!”.

11 p.m., time for the great Big Noise concert on the pool stage. This band is formed by nothing less than Joe Lynn Turner (ex-Deep Purple and Rainbow) on the vocals, Carlos Cavazo (ex-Quiet Riot) on the guitar, Phil Sousan (played with Ozzy Osbourne, Vince Neil and Billy Idol) on the bass, and, on the drums, Vinnie Appice (ex-Black Sabbath e Heaven & Hell).

Carlos Cavazo, myself and Vinnie Appice (ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!)

Day Two – 31/01

1 a.m. and it was time for us to play on the smaller stage. On the first beats of Creeping Death, the snare drum head just blew away and before the second song got started, Eric, drummer for the Iron Maiden tribute band and his roadie, helped me lending me another snare, so I could keep on playing. I got no words to say about this unexpected help! But let’s keep on moving, because the show must go on! One hour set played, a concert finished and all the tiredness of a well enjoyed day, brought me a slight headache. Yes, it was time to get some rest!

Damage Inc (Metallica tribute) playing in Salão Rendez Vous

I didn’t get out of the ship (it stopped twice so we could jump down the boat to get to know two beaches: Ilha de Jaguanum, in Sepetiba Bay, and Búzios in Rio de Janeiro). This was the day I had more time to know everything: the ship, the people, and I could enjoy a little bit of the pool, by the sound of Command6, not a tribute band this time, ‘cause they played their own original songs, together with a handful of random cover songs (very well played, by the way), and the guys were awesome!

8:30 p.m. Children of the Beast (Iron Maiden tribute band) played at the Theater stage and made a great show, including a stage production totally Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Tour-like, with Eddie (as a mummy) getting on stage during Powerslave, and the sideshow of Bruno Sutter, who even singing, can’t leave behind his funny side. The highlights were, of course, for the beautiful huge drum set, together with the performance of the drummer Eric, who simply floats on the kit, in a true mix of Nicko and Clive Burr.

The nightfall came and besides the other shows going on, Sepultura was the main attraction of that night, on the pool stage. The clock struck 11:30 p.m. and the debauchery and a heavy, loud and crystal-clear sound started, with a joyful Sepultura on stage. I talked about this to Andreas and he confirmed me that yes, they were happy in fact, due to the good vibe going on the ship. Even the crew saw Sepultura live. We can surely say that something real good is about to come, cause “The New One”, new song played, still untitled, is a helluva good one.

Vitor, Derick and I.

After Sepultura, I went to the Rendez-Vous Saloon (I remembered the name!!) to see the AC/DC tribute band, which counts on a great friend of mine, Elson, on the vocals, and what comes next happened to be one of the best moments in the cruise. The tribute band was playing, and, on my left, I saw Joe Lynn Turner, who couldn’t hold his feelings and was enjoying the concert a lot. I went to get a drink and hang around, and when I come back, where was Joe Lynn Turner? Of course he was making a duet, singing Highway to Hell with the band. I knew he wouldn’t be able to hold that energy inside him! Right after, the band Dirty Deeds played some other songs, and suddenly, all Big Noise guys showed up on stage to jam with them. ‘Angus’ and the other guys hand over their instruments and let them start pulling out relics, like Smoke on the Water (Deep Purple), Long Live Rock n’ Roll (Rainbow) and Tush (ZZ Top), with Vinnie Appice and all the other ones playing less than four feet from me. Remarkable!

Day Three – 01/02

The day started with great enthusiasm, ‘cause we were gonna play on the pool stage, at a cool time, 4 p.m. I replaced my snare drum head, got a pretty good check out on the bass drum pedals, on the drumsticks and on the clothes I was gonna wear while playing. We talked about what would be the best set list and I got onto the stage with a certain advance, to check out the drums and stuff. I spent around one hour (and what a holy hour!) rehearsing the hardest parts for me, like the double bassdrums in One and the semiquavers (or sixteenth notes) of Fight Fire with Fire, together with the essential rudiments to warm my hands up. Time has come, and the sound of the drums were delicious, not by chance, ‘cause it was a Mapex Pro M series, just like mine. It felt just like home. I remember having a good time and I felt that too about Alê (Ancestrall) on guitars and vocals, Edu (ChaosFear) on the guitars and Paulo (from Monster, forever) on the bass guitar, my band mates.

Damage Inc (Metallica Tribute) on the pool stage

Two very interesting things happened during the concert. Jeff Scott Soto (solo, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Axel Rudi Pell, Trans-Syberian-Orchestra), who was watching it, was invited to sing Stone Cold Crazy, of course on the Metallica’s version, and it was great. During breakfast, Alê said that a man (later known as Fantomas) commented that it would be perfect if one of the bands could play Slayer, ‘cause none of them had done that yet. He just didn’t know it was too dangerous to tell him that. Then, you already know what happened, right? Yes, we’ve played Raining Blood, from Slayer and everything was right. I could play the song that has always haunted me the most, mainly because of the double bass. After that, the cruise ship could even sink, ‘cause I would be in peace! The sound was great and we ended the set with Seek and Destroy, with Bruno Sutter (from the humor program Hermes e Renato, and, on that occasion, singing for the Iron Maiden Tribute) and my brother Vitor, from Torture Squad on the vocals, and my other braggart brother Castor miming to the music and imitating Gene Simmons with the well-known axe-like bass guitar (Paulo’s). Everybody was on the stage and that can be described with one word: party!

Damage Inc (Metallica Tribute) on the pool stage in the end of the gig.

After the concert, I went to the pool to enjoy the Beatles tribute band, with that ol’ feeling of mission accomplished, once it is real rewarding to see everybody enjoying the songs you’re playing and to know you are, somehow, contributing to people’s welfare on that moment. Real rewarding!

About the band Beatles Forever, I’ll only say two things: the band is from 1976 and the bass player is right-handed, but learnt how to play as a left-handed, just to look exactly like Paul McCartney… Do I have to say anything else? Yes, a greeting to the band’s John Lennon, a very nice dude.

The main feature was in charge of Jeff Scott Soto, having in his band the guys from the band Tempestt, together with Hugo Mariutii, on the guitar. Talking to the drummer, I found out the he, just like me, is a great Queensryche fan. But as soon as we started talking, I noticed that he is more fan of the band than I am, because he likes the album Q2K. And believe it or not, he likes it very much! Well, that is too much for me! You really gotta be a huge fan to like that album!

After this show, I decided to take some rest, because I was too tired. But I heard through my friends, that jams were happening on the Rendez-Vous Saloon stage til late nite.
At 7:30 am the other day, we arrived at the Santos Port and the dream was over. But, for the happiness of the headbangers nation, it was over just for this year, cause, according to the production, there’s gonna be more on the next year.

Paulão, Alê,Vitor and I.

Living this experience was awesome, and, as I heard when we were there, it seemed like we had died and gone to heaven (or would that be hell? Who knows…) Meeting old friends like Paulão (from Baranga, but, for me, an eternal Firebox) and his girl Letícia, a great singer, making new friends, taking a bunch of Torture Squad CDs and T-shirts and coming back only with two of them on my hands, just made me and everybody love even more what we do and feel that the Gods of Rock are somewhere and somehow watching over us, and if, at any time, you deserve it, you will be contemplated with unimaginable gifts you’ll take with you for the rest of your life.

Myself and the most rocker couple that I know, Paulão and Letícia.

Special thanks to Monika, Allan, all staff, friends from all the (competent) bands, to my eternal soul brothers Vitinho and Castor and of course to my Metallica tribute bandmates, who only didn’t literally killed me of laughing, because it was not the right moment for me to die, but they were very close of doing it!
Eternal good vibes to everyone!

No comment, it’s better…

JANUARY/2011

BENNY GREB

Baterista Alemão que gravou recentemente o seu premiado dvd The Language of drumming.  Achei muito legal sua didática junto com as paisagens que tem no dvd,  tocando em um campo gramado ou em uma sala com trio de metais.

Runaways - The Movie
